This passage quotes the song "From a Distance" in which Bette Midler explains that while up close the evils of the world can readily be seen, from a distance you can't really see them very well, so everything looks like it's going just fine, and that GOD is watching Earth from a significant distance so he thinks everything is actually going swell down there. How true that is.
